This is a redesign of the original 1893 “Map of the Retail Places of Business” in the district covered by the Christian Homestead Association.
With a Listing houses of ill-fame, saloons, free theatre saloons, second-hand clothing stores, barber shops, restaurants, etc.
Within a 6-block area where Canalside currently resides, the Canal District had 75 brothels, more than 120 saloons and 19 “free theatre saloons”. This area later became known as “Dante Place,” a tenement neighborhood for Italian and Sicilian immigrants. In 1938, Dante Place was demolished and was roughly where the Buffalo Memorial Auditorium once stood.
