Looking up Main Street, c1905

The city of Buffalo began as a small village based around trade between early French and English settlers and Iroquois tribes. After surveyor Joseph Ellicott laid out a radial street plan in 1804, the city burgeoned into a major industrial and commercial port city. The bicycle spoke-like layout spread out around Main Street, a thoroughfare extending from the bustling waterfront to various towns across the state of New York.
