Inside Donner Steel, c1920

Iron ore smelting began in Western New York during the late 1860s, its growth stimulated by both the Erie Canal and railroads, connecting the coalfields of Pennsylvania. The Civil War era assisted iron and steel production along Buffalo?s waterfront. The steel industry continued to boom throughout the early 1900s with companies such as Donner Steel Company and Bethlehem Steel, adding great wealth to the local economy.
